I asked Afonso de Portugal to compose the music for my Chase Scene, giving him the appropriate direction and required details. Only a fraction of his music was used, and I'm thinking of using the full music for the professional showreel. Benjamim Castanheira, sound design student, offered to help by doing the sound for the animation. We recorded the foley and voices at a friend's studio, where I made some sketches of the session: The process of animating the chase scene can be demonstrated through the following video. There were different stages for each shot's creation: 1-Animatic/Layout 2-Rough animation 3-Clean-up outlines 4-Color 5-Form shadow 6-Cast shadow and details To illustrate the backgrounds for the chase scene, I had to make sure the lightning and perspectives would be the same as in the storyboard. For that reason, I decided to do a lightning version of layout, deciding on where the light would be for both the animation and backgrounds: After this decision-making phase, I was able to illustrate the actual backgrounds: A background that was particularly difficult to understand was the one from shot 11. The high angle perspective was very hard for me to visualize! Here is part of the process: For the chase scene's storyboard and animatic I had to shoot some live footage, understanding the perspective for the composition of each shot. I started by doing a rough sketched storyboard, comparing ideas: Using this storyboard as reference, I recorded my colleagues walking/running, to understand the perspective constraints. A good example of how I solved this is the transition between shot 1 and 2: Storyboard: Animatic: To get more comfortable with the Animatic process before doing the animatic for the final project, I decided to experiment creating an animatic for a scene of Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". For the chase scene I decided to have a young girl going back home alone very late at night, and a burglar/rapist frightening/chasing her. For the last assignment of this course's level we were asked to develop a 20-25 seconds animation of a chase scene. After some research, I started to develop my visual ideas. For the final project of this course's first year, we were asked to develop a 20-25 seconds animation of a Chase scene, I started researching different chase scenes, specially running scenes, analysing its choices of shot composition, timings, etc.
For the pull exercise we had to do stop-motion animation and learn how to build puppets. The making of a puppet was really interesting and enjoyable, even though I didn't use it in the final animation. For the pull, I watched some reference footage and sketched from life, making notes of timings. Final animation: Animating a push action while learning the Maya software was really difficult. Therefore, I struggled with this assignment more than the rest. Nevertheless, I have done my best within my constraints. Before animating I studied the action, breaking down a few key positions and timings. Final animation: During the 2-weeks character design course with Julia, I've learned very helpful methods to design and develop characters. There are different stages for the process, and exploring different approaches and media for each stage helps me understanding which ones are more suited for my own work. The workshop was divided into two parts. The first part was a free exploration of character finding: The other part of the workshop was developing two characters from Roald Dahl's short story "Taste": I started the design work for the 2 character's assignment thinking of doing an old lady and her demon-like persona. Although I haven't finalized both characters, their development was helpful, I've learned quite a lot in the process, exploring concept art and different medias. Initial research sketches: From the research, I started making decisions on how the old lady would look like, applying the methods learned during the workshop with Julia. A similar process was applied for the demon character: On the 7th of January we had only one working day to develop a character. Since I was out of practice, decided to start by doing a lot of my crazy doodles creatures. From that first experimentation doodling session, I chose the character to explore further. The teenager with a strange hair's facial composition intrigued me, so I decided to do him. During December I've mainly worked on the projects I have outside of university, having meetings about "Lisboa em Voo de Peixe" and "A Menina do Mar", selling drawings and planning exhibitions. I was able to sketch now and then, but not much. |
