To illustrate the backgrounds for the chase scene, I had to make sure the lightning and perspectives would be the same as in the storyboard. For that reason, I decided to do a lightning version of layout, deciding on where the light would be for both the animation and backgrounds: After this decision-making phase, I was able to illustrate the actual backgrounds: A background that was particularly difficult to understand was the one from shot 11. The high angle perspective was very hard for me to visualize! Here is part of the process:

For the chase scene I decided to have a young girl going back home alone very late at night, and a burglar/rapist frightening/chasing her. For the last assignment of this course's level we were asked to develop a 20-25 seconds animation of a chase scene. After some research, I started to develop my visual ideas. During the 2-weeks character design course with Julia, I've learned very helpful methods to design and develop characters. There are different stages for the process, and exploring different approaches and media for each stage helps me understanding which ones are more suited for my own work. The workshop was divided into two parts. The first part was a free exploration of character finding: The other part of the workshop was developing two characters from Roald Dahl's short story "Taste": I started the design work for the 2 character's assignment thinking of doing an old lady and her demon-like persona. Although I haven't finalized both characters, their development was helpful, I've learned quite a lot in the process, exploring concept art and different medias. Initial research sketches: From the research, I started making decisions on how the old lady would look like, applying the methods learned during the workshop with Julia. A similar process was applied for the demon character: On the 7th of January we had only one working day to develop a character. Since I was out of practice, decided to start by doing a lot of my crazy doodles creatures. From that first experimentation doodling session, I chose the character to explore further. The teenager with a strange hair's facial composition intrigued me, so I decided to do him. |
